Is the sun going down on American Idol's Clay Aiken? On Tuesday, Perez Hilton reported that the 32-year-old singer had been dropped from his label, Decca Records. But Aiken says that it's his own decision not to work on a new album.
"There is no upcoming album planned at this time," the singer tells The Hollywood Reporter. "I am focusing on my live show and heading out on tour this week for the next few months. The truth is, I have no desire to get back into the studio anytime soon."
If Decca did drop Aiken (and right now they're not saying one way or the other), it probably has a lot to do with sales of his latest album, Tried and True, which was released in June. The record featured two songs that Aiken had once sung on American Idol -- "Mack the Knife" and "Unchained Melody" -- along with other nostalgic pop tracks such as "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" and "Misty." Despite decent reviews, the album tanked, selling only 63,000 copies (compared to 2.8 million for his 2003 debut album).
Still, Aiken isn't ready to retire quite yet. He'll be performing songs from Tried and True on a PBS-sponsored national tour through March. The question is: Where will the baby-faced TV star go from here? Tried and True attempts to turn Aiken into a Harry Connick, Jr. type, which seems like a good idea -- and yet nobody bought the record. Now that Aiken is in his 30s and no longer being followed everywhere by a crowd of adoring "Claymates," it's time for him to figure out what he wants to be when he grows up.
